Virginia Eskin and José Lezcano

With this program, José Lezcano (guitar) and Virginia Eskin (piano), two of the most celebrated musicians of the Monadnock region, pay tribute to the fiery and sensual music of Spain and Latin America. Works for piano include Federico Moreno Torroba’s Sonatina, an adaption of his solo guitar work, featuring lively Fandango rhythms in the first movement, and a lyrical and melodic Andante. Mexican composer Manuel Ponce’s Sonata is a neoclassical masterpiece featuring impressionist harmonies, dense counterpoint, and singing lyricism. Boccherini’s Fandango, is a classic of the genre; the Italian composer enjoyed a long residence as court musician in Madrid and absorbed Spanish folk music into his style. Ms. Eskin contributes syncopated piano solos including Brazilian tangos by early twentieth century pianist Ernesto Nazareth, and “Evocacion” from Spaniard Isaac Albeniz’ virtuoso suite, “Iberia.” Mr. Lezcano’s guitar solos include the moody “Plainte” by Brazilian guitarist Marco Pereira, and Joaquin Malat’s “Serenata Española,” a piano solo which has become a classic of the guitar repertoire. Lezcano’s own three-movement composition for guitar & piano, Fantasia Latina, includes a touching tribute to his late brother, Gustavo, a founding member of Miami Sound Machine and frequent performer with the Bee Gees.

This program is free, thanks to a grant from the Cheshire County Board of Commissioners.
