The barberry plant, which has sharp leaves and is extremely thorny, is an invasive species that spreads readily and dominates other native plants. Although it is credited with some medicinal uses, it does not provide food or habitat for wildlife.

A collaboration between the Nelson Conservation Commission and the Harris Center, the barberry pull on the Bailey Brook Trail is a vigorous and satisfying project that results in the reduction of this intrusive plant, which leaves more opportunity for more desirable forest flora.

Participants should be prepared for mosquitoes, and should wear thick gloves and clothing that will resit barb penetration. You will enjoy the camaraderie of this woodland adventure, and will also get to meet the Root Slayer!
